CARE & MAINTENANCE
HOW TO KEEP YOUR WALNUT AT ITS BEST
Walnut is durable enough for daily kitchen use but like all hardwood it benefits from simple, consistent care. Here's what we tell every customer who buys an Walnut countertop from us.
Wipe with a damp cloth after use never leave standing water on the surface.
If oiled re-oil every 3 to 6 months with food-grade mineral oil to keep the grain sealed and fed.
For deeper protection apply a beeswax and mineral oil blend twice a year.
Light sand and re-oil every few years Walnut responds to refinishing better than almost any other wood.
The more you care for it — the better it looks. That's the magic of real wood.
FINISH OPTIONS
CHOOSE HOW YOUR WALNUT IS FINISHED
Every countertop leaves our Sarasota workshop sealed and ready to install. You choose the finish that fits how you live in your kitchen.
Recommended POLYURETHANE Full waterproof seal with a glossy or satin sheen. The most protective finish creates a hard barrier between the wood and everything else. Best for: bar tops, around sinks, high-moisture areas.
HARDWAX OIL Water-resistant matte finish that soaks into the wood rather than sitting on top. Low maintenance, durable, and the most popular choice for Florida kitchens. Best for: everyday kitchen use.
NATURAL OIL Food-safe mineral oil the most natural finish available. Enhances the grain, easy to reapply at home, and safe for food contact. Best for: active kitchen countertops.
Not sure which finish is right for you? Call us or visit our Sarasota showroom we'll show you all three in person.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Have a question about Walnut specifically? Call us directly.
Is Walnut good for kitchen countertops?
Yes — American Black Walnut is one of the most prized hardwoods for kitchen countertops in the world. It is hard, durable, and develops a rich patina over time that makes it look more beautiful with every year of use. A Walnut countertop is an investment that lasts decades.
Is Walnut butcher block worth the price?
Yes. Walnut is more expensive than other species but it is also one of the most durable, most beautiful, and most timeless countertop materials available. Unlike granite or marble it can be sanded and refinished if it ever shows wear. You buy it once and it lasts a lifetime.
Does Walnut butcher block darken over time?
Yes — and that is part of what makes it so special. Walnut naturally deepens and enriches in tone over time, especially with regular oiling. The patina it develops makes each countertop completely unique and more beautiful with age.
How do I care for a Walnut countertop?
Wipe spills immediately with a dry cloth. If oiled re-oil every 4 to 6 months with food-safe mineral oil. Use a cutting board for heavy chopping. If scratches appear, lightly sand in the direction of the grain and re-oil. Walnut responds to care better than almost any other wood.
Is Walnut butcher block waterproof?
Walnut is water resistant when properly sealed. Always wipe spills immediately and avoid leaving standing water on the surface. We recommend a hardwax oil or polyurethane finish for kitchens in Florida for maximum moisture protection.
Can I get a custom size Walnut countertop?
Yes — we cut all Walnut countertops to your exact dimensions at our Sarasota workshop. Sink cutouts, custom edge profiles, and island overhangs are all available. Include your measurements when requesting a quote and we handle everything from there.
