CARE & MAINTENANCE
HOW TO KEEP YOUR HEVEA AT ITS BEST
Hevea is a medium-density hardwood that responds well to regular care. It takes stain easily, so a little attention goes a long way. Here's what we tell every customer who buys a Hevea countertop from us.
Wipe spills immediately. Hevea stains easily and can pick up color from spills, so don't leave moisture sitting on the surface.
If oiled re-oil every 3 to 4 months with food-safe mineral oil slightly more often than Acacia to keep the grain protected.
Always use a cutting board Hevea can mark more easily than harder species so protect the surface during heavy food prep.
For extra protection apply a beeswax and mineral oil blend every 6 months especially around the sink area.
The more consistently you care for it the more beautiful it becomes. That's the magic of real wood.
FINISH OPTIONS
CHOOSE HOW YOUR HEVEA IS FINISHED
Every countertop leaves our Sarasota workshop sealed and ready to install. You choose the finish that fits how you live in your kitchen.
Recommended POLYURETHANE Full waterproof seal with a glossy or satin sheen. The most protective finish creates a hard barrier between the wood and everything else. Best for: bar tops, around sinks, high-moisture areas.
HARDWAX OIL Water-resistant matte finish that soaks into the wood rather than sitting on top. Low maintenance, durable, and the most popular choice for Florida kitchens. Best for: everyday kitchen use.
NATURAL OIL Food-safe mineral oil the most natural finish available. Enhances the grain, easy to reapply at home, and safe for food contact. Best for: active kitchen countertops.
Not sure which finish is right for you? Call us or visit our Sarasota showroom — we'll show you all three in person.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Have a question about Hevea specifically? Call us directly.
Is Hevea good for kitchen countertops?
Yes, Hevea is a solid hardwood that handles everyday kitchen use well. Its fine, uniform grain makes it easy to clean and maintain. We recommend always using a cutting board, but for regular kitchen use it performs beautifully.
Can I stain my Hevea countertop?
Yes, Hevea takes stain exceptionally well. Its light, uniform grain absorbs stain evenly, giving you a consistent and clean finish. Popular choices include espresso stain for a dark, rich look, walnut stain for warm mid tones, and natural oil if you want to keep the original blonde tone.
What is Hevea espresso stain?
Hevea espresso stain is one of our most popular finish options. It transforms the natural light blonde tone of Hevea into a deep, rich dark brown — similar to Walnut but at a lower price point. It works beautifully with white or grey kitchen cabinets and gives a high-end look without the cost of darker premium species.
Is Hevea waterproof?
If your Hevea is sealed with polyurethane, it’s water-resistant. Wipe spills immediately and never leave standing water on the surface. With a proper finish applied at our Sarasota workshop, it handles Florida kitchens very well.
How often do I need to oil my Hevea countertop? If Oiled.
If oiled, every 3 to 4 months with food-safe mineral oil. Hevea is slightly more absorbent than harder species so regular oiling keeps the grain protected and the surface looking its best. If it starts to look dry or lighter in color that is your sign to re-oil.
How long will a Hevea countertop last?
With proper care many years. Hevea is a sustainable, durable hardwood that responds well to refinishing. If the surface ever shows wear it can be lightly sanded and re-oiled to look brand new. That is something laminate or tile can never offer you.
